45kg Gas Bottle Refill or Exchange: What’s the Difference?
People search for a “45kg gas bottle refill” but what they almost always receive is an exchange. The distinction is worth stating plainly, because it is a genuine point of confusion and answering it directly builds trust.
- Refilling means gas is pumped into the cylinder you already own, on site or at a depot.
- Exchange means your empty cylinder is taken away and replaced with a full one that has already been filled, inspected and tested at a filling plant.
ELGAS offers both refill and exchange options, depending on your location and service requirements. For 45kg home LPG cylinders, exchange is the most common solution, providing a convenient and efficient way to keep your gas supply topped up.
Customers looking for an even more convenient option may be eligible for ELGAS EasyGas®: Automatic LPG Delivery, where ELGAS monitors your LPG usage and schedules cylinder exchanges before you run low on gas. Availability varies by service area.
Whichever option you choose, ELGAS customers benefit from:
- Professionally inspected and pressure-tested cylinders
- No waiting while cylinders are filled
- Cylinder maintenance, testing and certification managed by ELGAS
- Safe and convenient delivery without handling heavy cylinders yourself
Both terms are used interchangeably in everyday conversation, so searching for a “45kg gas bottle refill” will reach the right service.

Reliable Home LPG Supply with Automatic Delivery Support
A twin-cylinder installation provides a practical and reliable LPG solution for New Zealand homes. When linked by a 45kg gas bottle changeover valve, you get an uninterrupted supply. See LPG gas bottle sizes and dimensions for more info.
When one bottle becomes empty, your system can switch to the reserve cylinder while you arrange delivery of a replacement bottle. Combined with ELGAS SMS reminders and local delivery support, this helps minimise interruptions to your household hot water, heating and cooking.
How to Tell When Your 45kg Gas Bottle Is Empty
A 45kg gas bottle has no gauge, so there are three practical ways to check how much gas is left.
- The warm water test. Pour warm water down the side of the cylinder, then run your hand down the same path. The cylinder feels cool where there is still liquid gas, and the point where the temperature changes is the gas level.
- Weight. An empty cylinder weighs its tare weight, which is stamped on the collar. Anything above that is remaining gas.
- The changeover indicator. On a twin-bottle installation with an automatic changeover valve, the indicator shows when supply has switched to the reserve cylinder, which is the signal to order a replacement.
ELGAS SMS Gas Check Alerts prompt you to run this check so you order before the reserve bottle runs low.

45kg Gas Bottle FAQs
Do I need one 45kg gas bottle or two?
Most New Zealand homes run two, connected by a changeover valve. When the first empties, supply continues from the reserve cylinder while a replacement is delivered, so there is no interruption to hot water, cooking or heating.
Can I refill my own 45kg gas bottle?
No. Home 45kg cylinders are exchanged rather than refilled on site. Your empty cylinder is collected and replaced with one that has already been filled, inspected and tested.
Is delivery included in the 45kg gas bottle price?
Yes. ELGAS includes delivery at no extra charge.
Who installs the 45kg gas bottles?
A trained ELGAS driver disconnects the empty cylinder, connects the replacement and checks the connection as part of every exchange.
What happens if I run out of gas?
On a twin-cylinder installation with an automatic changeover valve, supply switches to the reserve bottle without you doing anything. SMS Gas Check Alerts prompt you to order a replacement before the reserve runs low.
