GasNZ reassures customers that “gas decline” stories are not about LPG supply

Despite the diminishing supplies of natural gas in New Zealand, GasNZ confirms there is no shortage of LPG in the country.

Chief Executive Jeffrey Clarke explains that most news stories about declining “gas” production refer specifically to natural gas, not LPG. These reports are not relevant to LPG users.

“LPG supplies are not declining like natural gas is,” he says.

New Zealand has around 300,000 LPG customers – including all South Island gas consumers – who do not need to worry about the decline in natural gas affecting their supply.

Clarke says people often ask how to tell whether they use LPG or natural gas. The distinction is simple:

  • If your gas comes in a cylinder or tank, it is LPG.
  • If you live in the South Island, your gas is LPG because there is no natural gas network there.
  • If your gas is piped to your home or business in the North Island, it is most likely natural gas.

If customers remain unsure, Clarke encourages them to check with their gas retailer.

Clarke also reassures New Zealanders that LPG supply remains stable despite geopolitical tensions, including conflict in the Middle East. LPG suppliers in New Zealand report strong and reliable stock levels.

“Most of New Zealand’s LPG comes from Australia and the USA, with some produced domestically,” he says. “None of the LPG imported into New Zealand is shipped through the Middle East.”
