3. SAFETY CHECKS RECOMMENDED FOLLOWING AN EARTHQUAKE FOR CYLINDER CUSTOMERS

Your safety is paramount at all times and we recommend that you make some precautionary checks on your installation:
Ensure that there are no gas smells inside your house/building or around the gas supply connection point to your property. (LPG contains a stenching agent that smells like rotten eggs if detected).

A. If you detect a gas leak turnoff your cylinder supply by turning the green valve handle clockwise.
B. You should also check the cylinder connection hoses to ensure they are not stretched or under strain as a result of moving cylinders. Ensure that the cylinders are upright and that the chain restraints and fixings are still in place.
C. If you detect a leak then after turning off the cylinder(s) you should call a gasfitter. You can look up “Gas Fitters” in the Yellow Pages to assist you.

4. RETICULATION CUSTOMERS

A. Following completion of checks of the bulk storage and the reticulation line we will make every effort to maintain normal supply . There may be ongoing testing and work being done on the mains in certain badly affected streets and gas detectors in place in areas of potential concern.
B. Use of and turning appliances on. The main points are:

  • There is a shut off valve at the gas meter for each property which is usually a butterfly type tap or lever. When in line with the pipe it is on and at right angle [across pipe] it is off.
  • Any gas smell, pipe damage or concern shut off supply immediately. Eliminate sources of ignition and ventilate the area to allow gas build up to disperse. Then contact the Elgas service agent on 0800 435427 (0800 4 ELGAS) option 2. Christchurch Customers can call Pipetec on 03 343 6947.
  • Any houses with structural damage where there are known gas pipe lines, shut off the supply immediately and keep off until checked.
  • Do not leave appliances running unattended if they have not been checked.
  • In cases where the supply is shut off at the meter or customers wish to get their system checked, contact the Elgas service agent on 0800 435427 (0800 4 ELGAS) option 2. Christchurch Customers can call Pipetec on 03 343 6947.
